Why Kenya Is the Best Safari Destination for
British Travellers
Kenya has been the destination of choice for British safari travellers since the days of Karen Blixen and the Denys Finch Hatton — and with very good reason. Of all the African countries a British traveller might consider for a wildlife holiday, Kenya offers the most straightforward combination of accessibility, outstanding wildlife, well-established tourism infrastructure, English as the primary business language, and a track record of welcoming British visitors that stretches back well over a century.
The flight from London Heathrow to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport takes 8.5 hours on a direct Kenya Airways or British Airways service — shorter than a flight to Bangkok, comparable to New York, and significantly easier than the connections required to reach Tanzania, Botswana, or South Africa. You land in a country where English is an official language, where your driver will have been briefed on your preferences before you arrive, and where the first game drive begins the same afternoon in most itineraries.
At Denki Travels, we have been working with British families, couples, honeymooners, and solo travellers for over a decade. We understand UK school holiday calendars. We quote in GBP on request. We know that British travellers value honest information over promotional language, that you want to know about visa requirements, health precautions, and safety before you want to know about sunsets and sundowners. This page covers all of it — in straightforward British English, without the glossy brochure nonsense.
Flights from the UK to Kenya
Your Complete Options
Getting there is straightforward. Here’s what British travellers need to know.
Direct Flights from London to Nairobi
Kenya Airways operates the most frequent direct Heathrow–Nairobi service, with approximately five departures per week. Flight time is 8 hours 30 minutes outbound and around 9 hours 10 minutes on return (the jet stream adds time westbound). British Airways also operates direct Heathrow–Nairobi services on selected dates. Both airlines fly into Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (IATA: NBO) — Kenya’s main international gateway and the starting point for all Denki Travels ground operations.
| Airline | UK Departure | Route | Flight Time | Approx. Return Fare | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kenya Airways | London Heathrow (LHR) | Direct | 8h 30m | £650–£1,100 | Most frequent, best availability, Sky Team miles |
| British Airways | London Heathrow (LHR) | Direct | 8h 30m | £700–£1,200 | Avios redemptions, BA Executive Club points |
| Emirates | Multiple UK airports | Via Dubai (DXB) | 13–15h total | £580–£950 | Regional UK airports, competitive Business Class |
| Qatar Airways | London Heathrow & Manchester | Via Doha (DOH) | 13–15h total | £560–£920 | Often most affordable, Qsuites Business Class |
| KLM | Multiple UK airports via AMS | Via Amsterdam | 14–16h total | £550–£900 | Great for regional UK cities, Flying Blue miles |
| Ethiopian Airlines | London Heathrow, Manchester | Via Addis Ababa | 14–17h total | £480–£820 | Most budget-friendly option, modern fleet |
British traveller tip
Book your Nairobi flights at least 3–4 months in advance for summer holiday departures and 2–3 months ahead for other seasons. Kenya Airways and British Airways direct services sell out during the July–August peak. Signing up for fare alerts on Skyscanner or Google Flights for the LHR–NBO route is the most reliable way to catch the best prices.
Flying from Outside London
- Manchester: Emirates via Dubai or Ethiopian via Addis Ababa offer competitive options with single connections to Nairobi.
- Edinburgh & Glasgow: Connect through Heathrow for Kenya Airways or BA direct services; Edinburgh also has good KLM connections via Amsterdam.
- Birmingham: Good connections via Amsterdam (KLM) or Heathrow for direct services.
- Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle: Connect through Heathrow, Amsterdam, or Dubai with Emirates for the most seamless routing.
Arriving at Nairobi — What to Expect
- Present your passport and Kenya eTA approval at the immigration desk at JKIA Terminal 1A (international arrivals).
- Collect your checked luggage from the baggage carousel — allow 20–35 minutes after landing.
- Proceed through customs — standard declarations apply; all wildlife products (ivory, animal skins, live plants) are prohibited.
- Your Denki Travels driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board bearing your name.
- No queuing for taxis, no negotiating fares — your transfer to the first hotel or lodge is pre-arranged and prepaid.
JKIA VIP option
Denki Travels offers a meet-and-greet airside service at JKIA for travellers who prefer to fast-track immigration and customs. Our JKIA-accredited representative meets you at the aircraft jet bridge, escorts you through priority channels, and has you in the vehicle within 10 minutes of landing. Available on request — particularly recommended for families with young children, elderly travellers, or anyone with a tight onward connection.

Kenya's Best National Parks for
British Safari Travellers
Where to go — what each park delivers and why British visitors love it
Masai Mara National Reserve
The must-do · Big Five year-round · Migration Jul–Oct
The Masai Mara is the reason most British travellers book Kenya — and it delivers every time. The resident lion prides, cheetah families, and leopard population make this the most reliably spectacular Big Five destination in Africa. During the summer holidays, the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings — 1.5 million animals, Nile crocodiles, the most extraordinary wildlife spectacle on Earth — happen right here.
- Big Five resident year-round
- Migration river crossings July–October (UK summer holidays)
- Private conservancy access — far fewer vehicles than the main reserve
- Hot air balloon safaris available from multiple operators
- 270 km from Nairobi (5–6 hrs road) or 45-min domestic flight
- Wide range of lodges from budget camps to ultra-luxury
Amboseli National Park
Most photogenic · Kilimanjaro backdrop · Year-round
Amboseli produces the single most photographed safari image in Africa — elephant herds moving in silhouette against the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. British photographers in particular return obsessed with this light. The park is 4 hours from Nairobi, compact and gentle, making it excellent for families and first-time visitors who want extraordinary wildlife without long game drive circuits.
- Best Kilimanjaro views in Africa (clear mornings only — rise early)
- 1,500+ habituated elephants in 58 known family groups
- Flat terrain — easy game drives, suitable for all ages
- February half-term aligns with clearest mountain visibility
- 4 hours by road from Nairobi, no flight required
- Combines perfectly with Masai Mara as a 7–10 night circuit
Lake Nakuru National Park
Rhino sanctuary · Flamingo lake · 2.5 hrs from Nairobi
Lake Nakuru is the most accessible national park from Nairobi and the most reliable place in Kenya to see black and white rhinoceroses. British families particularly love it — the fully fenced sanctuary means rhinos cannot leave, game viewing is productive within 30 minutes of entering, and the flamingo-pink lake shoreline is one of the most visually dramatic scenes in Africa.
- Kenya’s best rhino sanctuary — both black and white rhino
- Flamingo flocks colouring the alkaline lake pink
- Baboon Cliff panoramic viewpoint — children can leave the vehicle safely
- 160 km from Nairobi — ideal as a day trip or overnight stop
- Combines with Lake Naivasha for a perfect Rift Valley day or weekend
- Rothschild’s giraffe — one of Africa’s most endangered subspecies
Samburu National Reserve
The Special Five · Remote & wild · Northern Kenya
Experienced British safari travellers who have already done the Mara and Amboseli come to Samburu for something completely different — the wild, remote northern Kenya that feels entirely its own thing. The Special Five species found nowhere in the southern parks; the Ewaso Ng’iro River; the bone-white landscape and extraordinary heat that produces a different quality of wildlife encounter.
- The Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich
- Dramatic Ewaso Ng’iro River with giant Nile crocodiles
- Night drives in community conservancy areas
- Samburu cultural community visits
- 45 mins from Nairobi by light aircraft
- Combines with Masai Mara for the ultimate north–south Kenya circuit
Tsavo National Park
Kenya’s largest · Red elephants · Gateway to Mombasa
Tsavo is Kenya’s least-visited and most dramatically raw national park — covering 21,812 km² of ancient landscape with the famous red-dusted elephants and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs. Its position on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway makes it the perfect safari-to-beach routing for British visitors who want to end their trip at the Indian Ocean coast rather than returning to Nairobi.
- Red elephants stained by iron-rich laterite soil — unique to Tsavo
- Mzima Springs — crystal water in semi-arid landscape with underwater hippo viewing
- Lugard Falls and Mudanda Rock waterhole
- Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary — black rhino in Tsavo West
- 3 hours from Nairobi by road; 2 hours from Mombasa
- Natural circuit ending at Diani Beach or Mombasa airport
Nairobi National Park
Urban safari · Layover option · 7 km from city centre
British travellers arriving at JKIA for the first time often assume they will see nothing until the Masai Mara. In fact, the world’s only urban national park is 7 km from the terminal and fully accessible on a same-afternoon half-day game drive. Lions with Nairobi’s CBD on the horizon — it is the most cognitively dissonant wildlife experience available and a brilliant introduction to Kenya before the main safari begins.
- Wild lions, rhinos, and cheetahs 7 km from Nairobi centre
- Half-day game drive (3.5 hrs) — perfect for day-one arrivals
- JKIA layover safari option — minimum 5-hour transit required
- Over 50 black rhinos — one of Kenya’s most accessible populations
- Nairobi skyline behind the wildlife — world’s most surreal safari scene
- Combined with Giraffe Centre and Elephant Orphanage for a full city day

- Malaria risk in Kenya’s safari areas is real — anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended (see health section below)
- Consult your GP or a travel clinic (Nomad, Trailfinders) 6–8 weeks before departure
- AMREF Flying Doctors’ annual membership (~£40pp) provides medical evacuation cover throughout East Africa
- Standard UK travel insurance must explicitly cover emergency medical evacuation — check the small print
- Nairobi and the coast are dengue-risk areas — insect repellent is essential at all times
- All lodges Denki Travels uses have mosquito nets and/or air-conditioned rooms
What if something goes wrong?"
- We hold emergency vehicle reserves at key park locations — if your Land Cruiser breaks down, a replacement is dispatched within 60–90 minutes

"Is it ethical and sustainable?"
- Denki Travels operates exclusively within Kenya’s KATO-licensed framework — all operations comply with Kenya Wildlife Service conservation standards
- We prioritise private conservancy lodges that pay community levies directly to Maasai landowners surrounding the Mara ecosystem
- Vehicle behaviour in the parks is guided by KWS rules — no off-road driving, no approaching animals at sleeping distance
- The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Giraffe Centre — included in many of our city day tours — are genuine conservation organisations, not commercial wildlife attractions
- We recommend and book lodges that contribute to community employment and conservation research
"What about luggage on small aircraft?"
- Domestic bush aircraft in Kenya operate a strict 15 kg total luggage limit per person including hand luggage
- Bags must be soft-sided — no hard suitcases can be loaded into small aircraft cargo holds
- Excess luggage can be stored at Wilson Airport or JKIA at minimal cost for the duration of the bush portion of your trip
- We advise all UK clients to pack a soft holdall or duffel bag for the safari, with main suitcase stored at the first Nairobi hotel
- If you are doing a road-only itinerary, standard luggage restrictions do not apply

Kenya eTA — Entry Requirements for British Passport Holders
The process is straightforward. Here is exactly what British travellers need to do before they fly.
British passport holders require a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travel to Kenya. The eTA replaced the previous eVisa system in 2024. The application is completed entirely online at etakenya.go.ke — no embassy visit, no postal application, and no documents to carry
eTA Application — Step by Step
- Visit etakenya.go.ke — the official Kenya Immigration portal
- Select “Tourist” as your travel purpose
- Enter your British passport details exactly as they appear in your passport
- Upload a passport-sized photograph (digital format)
- Enter your travel dates and Kenyan accommodation address (your first lodge or hotel name and address)
- Pay the fee of USD 30 per person by international credit or debit card
- Processing typically takes 72 hours
- You will receive an approval document by email — present this digitally or printed at JKIA immigration
Key Facts for British Travellers

- Validity: Single entry, up to 90 days (maximum 30 days per visit)
- Processing time: 72 hours standard; same-day available
- Apply: At least 7 days before travel — earlier is safer

Health, Vaccinations & Malaria
The NHS-Aligned Kenya Guide
Straight NHS and FCDO-aligned guidance for British travellers visiting Kenya’s safari areas.
Kenya falls outside the NHS overseas emergency coverage — your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is not valid in Kenya. Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation cover is therefore not optional — it is essential. Nairobi’s private hospitals are excellent; reaching a hospital from a remote safari area is the issue, and evacuation by air from the Masai Mara can cost £20,000–£35,000 without insurance.
Recommended Vaccinations for Kenya
| Vaccine | Recommendation | Notes | Available on NHS? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis A | Strongly Recommended | Two doses give lifetime protection. Essential for all travellers to Kenya. | First dose on NHS; second may require private clinic |
| Typhoid | Strongly Recommended | Particularly important if visiting local restaurants or eating street food in Nairobi and Mombasa. | Injectable form available on NHS |
| Tetanus / Diphtheria / Polio | Recommended | Ensure your combined booster (Td/IPV) is up to date. Valid for 10 years. | Yes, available on NHS |
| Yellow Fever | Conditional | Not required for travel from the UK directly. Required if transiting via a Yellow Fever endemic country. Recommended if visiting high-risk areas. | Private travel clinic only |
| Rabies | Consider | Recommended for extended safari travel or if working with wildlife. Three doses required. | Private clinic only |
| Malaria Prevention | Essential for Safari Areas | Anti-malarial tablets required for all park areas outside Nairobi. See below. | Prescription required; some medications NHS, some private |
Malaria Prevention for British Travellers
Malaria risk in Kenya’s safari areas is classified as moderate to high. Nairobi city is considered very low risk. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, and the Mombasa coast are all malaria risk areas. Anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended by both the NHS and the FCDO for all travellers visiting these areas.
- Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone): The most commonly prescribed option for Kenya — taken daily starting 1–2 days before travel, throughout, and for 7 days after return. Available on private prescription (approximately £2–£4 per tablet). Generally well-tolerated.
- Doxycycline: Available on NHS prescription. Taken daily starting 1–2 days before travel, throughout, and for 28 days after return. Can cause sun sensitivity — use high-SPF sunscreen.
- Mefloquine (Lariam): Weekly tablet — good for longer trips. Can cause vivid dreams and sleep disturbance in some individuals.
- Consult your GP or travel clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure — this allows time for any vaccinations requiring multiple doses.
- Recommended travel clinics: Nomad Travel, Trailfinders Travel Clinic, and Boots Travel Health Clinic all offer comprehensive Kenya-specific pre-travel consultations.
AMREF Flying Doctors: We strongly recommend all UK travellers to Kenya purchase an AMREF Flying Doctors annual membership — approximately £40 per person. This provides emergency medical evacuation cover across East Africa and supplements your travel insurance. In the event of a serious medical emergency in a remote safari area, AMREF Flying Doctors are the primary evacuation service used by Kenya’s national parks. Pre-registration means evacuation can be authorised and dispatched faster.

What to Pack for a Kenya Safari
The British Traveller's List
Practical packing guidance written for the British climate baseline — where you’re coming from makes a significant difference to what you need.
One critical fact British travellers frequently underestimate: Kenya’s game drive vehicles have an open roof, which means direct sun exposure at altitude. The equatorial sun at 1,500–2,000 metres above sea level is significantly stronger than anything experienced in the UK — even on an overcast day. Factor 50+ sunscreen is non-negotiable, not a recommendation.
Safari Clothing
Neutral-coloured clothing only — khaki, beige, olive, grey, sand
No white (shows dust immediately) or bright colours (disturbs wildlife)
Long-sleeved shirts × 3 (sun and insect protection)
Lightweight trousers × 2 (not jeans — too warm and heavy)
Fleece or lightweight jacket for early mornings (can be 12°C before dawn)
Waterproof outer layer for the Aberdares or rainy season
Comfortable walking shoes for lodge grounds
Wide-brimmed sun hat — not a baseball cap,
which provides no neck protection
Beach Clothing (Diani Extension)
Lightweight summer clothing — the coast is hot and humid year-round
Swimwear × 2
Reef-safe sunscreen — Diani's reef is a protected marine reserve
Light cover-up for beach restaurants
Flip-flops and a pair of sandals
Light waterproof for occasional Indian Ocean showers
Modest clothing for Mombasa's Old Town
(mosques nearby)
Photography & Electronics
Camera with a zoom lens — minimum 300mm recommended for wildlife
Extra memory cards and charged batteries
Binoculars — minimum 8×42 magnification
Universal plug adaptor (Kenya uses British 3-pin sockets — you may not need one)
Portable power bank for charging in the vehicle
Dust bag or case for camera equipment — Tsavo's red dust is legendary
Laptop or tablet if you intend to work remotely (most lodges have WiFi)
Health & Essentials
Anti-malarial tablets as prescribed — full course, started before departure
DEET-based insect repellent — 50% concentration minimum
Factor 50+ sunscreen — two tubes minimum
Rehydration sachets (Dioralyte) for heat and stomach adjustments
Imodium for traveller's stomach upset
Any regular prescription medications in sufficient supply plus 20% extra
Travel insurance documents and 24/7 emergency number (printed)
AMREF Flying Doctors membership card
Money & Documents
Kenya eTA approval email (digital or printed)
Passport — minimum 6 months validity beyond return date
Travel insurance documents — emergency number on a separate card
US Dollars in small denominations for tipping (USD 10–15/day for your guide)
Wise or Starling fee-free travel card for ATM withdrawals in Kenya Shillings
Inform your UK bank before travel to prevent card blocks

Kenya Safari from the UK — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything British travellers ask before booking their Kenya safari — answered honestly and in full.
British passport holders require a Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which replaced the previous eVisa system in 2024. The eTA is applied for entirely online at etakenya.go.ke and costs USD 30 per person. Processing typically takes 72 hours, though same-day processing is sometimes available. You will receive a digital approval to present at Nairobi's JKIA on arrival. No embassy visit, no postal application, and no physical documents need to be carried — the approval is presented digitally or printed. Apply at least 7 days before travel to allow for any processing delays. Each child requires their own separate application.
Kenya Airways operates the most frequent direct service from London Heathrow (LHR) to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), with approximately five departures per week. Flight time is 8 hours 30 minutes. British Airways also operates direct LHR–NBO services on selected dates. For travellers from outside London, connecting services via Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), Amsterdam (KLM), or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) offer options from Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Birmingham. Connecting flights add 3–6 hours to total journey time but are frequently more affordable than direct options.
A complete Kenya safari holiday from the UK — including return flights and ground package — typically costs between £1,200 and £4,000 per person for a 7–10 night mid-range private safari. Budget group joining options start from around £1,000 per person including flights. Luxury fly-in itineraries in exclusive Masai Mara conservancies cost £4,500–£9,000 per person excluding flights. Ground-only packages (accommodation, game drives, guide, park fees, and transfers) range from £420 per person for a 3-day Masai Mara group safari to £6,000+ per person for a 10-night luxury circuit. Denki Travels provides fully itemised GBP quotations on request.
The FCDO advises normal precautions in Kenya's major tourist areas including the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, Lake Nakuru, and Nairobi's tourist and business districts. These destinations have well-established safety records for British visitors. All Denki Travels vehicles carry emergency radios and first aid kits, and our 24/7 Nairobi operations centre monitors every active client trip. We stay current with FCDO travel advice and will proactively contact you if advice changes before your departure. Every client receives a direct 24/7 emergency WhatsApp number answered around the clock throughout their trip.
UK travellers are particularly fortunate because British school holiday windows align closely with Kenya's peak wildlife seasons. The summer holidays (July–August) coincide with the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings in the Masai Mara — the most dramatic wildlife event on Earth. October half-term catches the tail end of the migration with fewer crowds. February half-term is excellent for Amboseli with clear Kilimanjaro views and outstanding big cat sightings. Easter holidays fall in the green season — significant lodge discounts and beautiful lush landscapes, though some afternoon rain is possible. Christmas and New Year is peak season across all parks.
The NHS recommends the following for Kenya travel: Hepatitis A (strongly recommended), Typhoid (recommended), Tetanus/Diphtheria/Polio booster if not up to date. Anti-malarial medication is strongly advised for all safari areas outside Nairobi — consult your GP or a travel clinic such as Nomad or Trailfinders at least 6–8 weeks before departure for an appropriate prescription (Malarone/atovaquone-proguanil is most commonly prescribed for Kenya). A Yellow Fever certificate is not required for direct travel from the UK but is required if transiting via a Yellow Fever endemic country. NHS Travel Health Pro and the FCDO Kenya travel page both carry current vaccination requirements.
ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) protection applies to package holidays sold by UK-based companies that include flights. Denki Travels is a Kenya-based KATO-licensed ground operator — for full ATOL protection on the flights element, book your international flights through a UK ATOL-licensed travel agent. We work with established UK travel agencies who can provide the complete ATOL-protected package combining our ground services with UK-booked flights. Alternatively, booking your flights directly through an ATOL-licensed agent and your ground package with Denki Travels gives you flight protection through the ATOL agent and in-country operational security through our ground team.
A minimum of 7 nights is recommended for a Kenya safari from the UK — enough to justify the 8.5-hour flight, cover two or three parks, and genuinely settle into the rhythm of the bush. A 10-night itinerary combining 7 nights on safari with 3 nights at Diani Beach is our most popular choice for British travellers and provides the ideal balance between wildlife immersion and beach relaxation. For UK families with the full summer holiday, a 14-night trip allows a complete Kenya experience without any sense of being rushed and allows your children to adapt to the different timezone before the main safari begins.
US Dollars are more widely accepted than British Pounds at Kenyan safari lodges, national parks, and tourism businesses — even though Kenya is primarily a GBP-source market. We recommend using a fee-free travel card (Wise, Starling, or Revolut) to withdraw Kenyan Shillings from ATMs at JKIA or in Nairobi for day-to-day spending. For tipping your guide and camp staff (USD 10–20 per day is standard), bring USD in small denominations from the UK. Inform your UK bank or building society before travel to prevent your debit or credit card being blocked for overseas transactions — this is the single most common avoidable problem British travellers encounter.
Yes — and it makes for one of the world's great travel experiences. A combined Kenya–Tanzania circuit covering the Masai Mara and Serengeti, with Ngorongoro Crater, is one of our most booked multi-country itineraries for British clients with 14 days or more. Adding Zanzibar — a 45-minute flight from Dar es Salaam or a 2-hour fast ferry — provides a beach ending with extraordinary Swahili heritage architecture in Stone Town and pristine north-coast beaches. Denki Travels manages the Kenya component directly and coordinates with trusted Tanzanian ground partners for a seamless booking from a single Nairobi-based contact.
Domestic bush aircraft in Kenya — used to fly between Nairobi and parks such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu — operate strict luggage limits of 15 kg total per person, including hand luggage, in a soft-sided bag. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be loaded into small aircraft cargo holds and will be refused at the gate. We strongly advise all British clients to pack a soft holdall or duffel bag for the bush portion of their trip. Main hard suitcases can be stored at the JKIA or at your first Nairobi hotel at minimal cost during the safari circuit. If your itinerary involves road-only transfers between all parks, standard luggage restrictions do not apply.
Kenya is one of the world's most family-friendly safari destinations. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Lake Nakuru are particularly suitable for children of all ages — smooth-ish game drive circuits, extraordinary wildlife density, and the kind of experiences (a lion passing ten metres from the vehicle; a hippo surfacing beside the boat at Lake Naivasha; feeding a baby elephant at the Sheldrick Trust) that children describe for years afterwards. Most mid-range and luxury lodges accept children from 5 years; some exclusive conservancy camps set a minimum of 8–12 years. Denki Travels confirms age policies for every lodge on your family itinerary before booking.
Your travel insurance for a Kenya safari must include: emergency medical evacuation cover of at least £500,000 (a medical airlift from a remote safari area costs £20,000–£35,000 without insurance); trip cancellation and curtailment cover; personal belongings and photographic equipment cover; and confirmation that standard game drive activities are covered (they are not typically classed as adventure activities, but confirm with your insurer). Your NHS or GHIC card is not valid in Kenya. UK-based insurers with safari-specific experience include Battleface, Campbell Irvine, and True Traveller. We additionally recommend AMREF Flying Doctors East Africa membership (approximately £40 per person) as a supplementary medical evacuation layer.
For peak season travel during UK summer holidays (July–August), book your Kenya safari and flights a minimum of 6–9 months in advance. Masai Mara conservancy camps frequently sell out during August by January of the same year — popular lodges such as Angama Mara and Mahali Mzuri can book up even earlier. For shoulder and value seasons (January–March, June, October–November), 3–4 months is generally sufficient for most lodge grades. The earlier you book, the wider your choice of specific lodges, room types, and the hot air balloon availability — which is limited to a small number of passengers per flight and books out months ahead during peak season.
Kenya operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3 year-round — Kenya does not observe daylight saving. During British Summer Time (late March to late October), Kenya is 2 hours ahead of the UK. During Greenwich Mean Time (late October to late March), Kenya is 3 hours ahead. This is a comfortable time difference — most travellers adapt within a day or two and do not experience significant jet lag. Kenya Airways' night departures from Heathrow arrive at JKIA in the morning Nairobi time, which is also morning UK time — making the first day in Kenya particularly manageable.
