Amboseli national park Overview

Amboseli national park is the home of African elephants. Visiting this park, you’re guaranteed of seeing herds of elephants in their natural habitat in large numbers. This makes Amboseli national park the second most popular in Kenya after Masai Mara.

As you enjoy your game drives, you will encounter elephants strolling around carrying their long tusks in pride to the watering areas.

Amboseli is found at the foot of mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s largest mountain.  When the clouds burn off, you will be fed with a clear vision of the mountain’s snowy peak. This gives the perfect viewing experience more so in the evening when the clouds are clear.

Even though Amboseli is predominantly occupied by the elephants, other animals like the gazelle, giraffe, zebra, and buffalo are also found in the park. During the game drives, they can be seen along the horizon roaming around the park.

  Large predators like lions, cheetah jackals, and hyenas are also present. Birdlife is also eminent at the park’s lakes. Cranes, ostriches, pelicans, and cranes are in plenty.

Amboseli national park Location

Amboseli is located in Loitoktok District, Rift Valley Province of Kenya the foot of mt Kilimanjaro at the border of Kenya and Tanzania. It is relatively close to the Tsavo east national park making it possible to effectively combine two destinations for your safari. 

Weather and climate in Amboseli national park

The Amboseli national park has two seasons. Dry season and wet season.

The Dry season starts in June and goes up to September with high temperatures of up to 26°.

The wet season is characterized by short rains followed by long rains. The long rains normally make roads impassable hence not advisable to visit the park during those times.

Between the months of October to December, it rains over the day and the temperatures are around 28°.

Between the Months of January and May, rains are consistent with April being the wettest Month.

Amboseli national park Wildlife

The Amboseli national park is well known for its large herds of elephants. You will see them roaming freely on the dusty grounds of the park in the morning and evening. During the day, they are always submerged in the Ol Kenya swamp foraging.

However, you will also find other animals and birds at Amboseli park. These include Lions, spotted hyenas, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, jackals, cheetahs,h and many more. Birdlife is also eminent. You will always see birds such as Cranes, ostriches, pelicans, and cranes in plenty.

Best time to visit Amboseli national park

Amboseli is open all year round hence can be visited any time. However, the best time to visit is during June and November when there is not a lot of rainfall hence easy accessibility.

This is the best time for game viewing since many animals are concentrated at the watering holes. Also, the weather during this period favors nature walks, birdwatching, and cool sunsets.

Attractions in Amboseli national park

Elephants.

This is where you will find a large concentration of African elephants. Watching these wonderful creatures in the swamp rolling and splashing mud at each other, will give you an everlasting experience.

Observation hill.

This is the place where you can come out of your car and walk. At the summit, you can take a look at the mountain peak of mt Kilimanjaro to the south.

It is at this point that you will have a clear view of the entire Amboseli park. You’ll also be able to look at the swampy plains to the east.

Sinet delta

Not far from the observation hill. Sinet delta gives a wonderful experience of birdwatching. Cranes, pelicans, cormorants, and eagles are here in large numbers.

As you turn to the south, look out for giraffes foraging treetops in the thick bushes. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro are also awe-inspiring

The Masai people.
