Giraffe center Daphne Sheldrick and Karen Blixen tour Nairobi Overview

There are mornings in Nairobi that feel like the whole city has agreed to be extraordinary. This is one of them.

The Giraffe Centre, Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and Karen Blixen Museum tour combines three of Nairobi’s most beloved and most distinct experiences into a single, perfectly sequenced day. It starts early — because the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s baby elephant visit is at 11am and books out fast.

At the Sheldrick Trust, you watch orphaned baby elephants — some only weeks old — come charging out of the forest for their morning mud bath and bottle feed. Their keepers narrate each animal’s story: how it was found, how it is recovering, and when it might be ready to return to the wild. The experience is simultaneously heartbreaking and deeply hopeful. Adults cry. Children are speechless. Both reactions are equally valid.

From there, the Giraffe Centre. You stand on a raised wooden platform at eye level with a full-grown Rothschild’s giraffe — one of Africa’s most endangered subspecies — and feed it from your palm while it regards you with complete, ancient calm. The Giraffe Centre has been breeding and releasing Rothschild’s giraffes for over 40 years. Fewer than 800 remain in the wild; the centre has returned dozens to protected areas across East Africa.

The day closes at the Karen Blixen Museum in the leafy suburb of Karen — the actual farmhouse described in “Out of Africa,” preserved almost exactly as Blixen left it in 1931. The Ngong Hills rise behind the house. The jacaranda trees are in full purple bloom. Kenya’s colonial history is visible in every room, and the weight of it is both beautiful and complicated in equal measure.

Three hours of your Nairobi day. Three experiences that justify a trip to Kenya on their own.

Major attractions

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant & Rhino Orphanage: This is an animal rescue and rehabilitation center located in Nairobi National Park. The orphanage is named after Daphne Sheldrick, a conservationist who dedicated her life to the protection of elephants and rhinos. During your tour, you can watch baby elephants and rhinos how they are being fed and cared for by their keepers, and raised before being taken to the wild. The orphanage also provides information on the threats facing elephants and rhinos and what can be done to help.

Giraffe Center: The Giraffe Center is a sanctuary for endangered Rothschild's giraffes. During your tour, you can hand-feed the giraffes and learn about their conservation status and behavior. If you are a nature lover, you can enjoy a nature walk on a nature trail and experience wide species of birds and indigenous trees.

Karen Blixen Museum: Located in the outskirts of Nairobi, the Karen Blixen Museum is the former home of the famous Danish author Karen Blixen, who wrote the memoir "Out of Africa." The house has been preserved as a museum and features exhibits on Blixen's life in Kenya, as well as artifacts from the colonial period.
